Painting ideas to liven up your home for spring Image

Looking to spruce up your home? Giving your walls, and even ceilings, a fresh coat of paint can rejuvenate your living spaces. Let’s get inspired.

It’s time to brighten your home for the season

After a long, cold winter there’s nothing better than opening the windows and letting in a fresh spring breeze. When you paint in the springtime, you take advantage of the mild temperatures and give the interior of your home a fresh new look for the rest of the year.

The ideal humidity level for painting is between 40% and 50%. If it’s hot out or has rained recently, make sure that your last coat is completely dry before starting your next coat. A dehumidifier can help control humidity levels in your home.

You’re likely already moving furniture around and dusting as part of your spring cleaning. By adding painting to your to-do list, you can make your home more inviting, impress your guests, and even increase the value of your home. On average, painting the interior and exterior of a home increases its value by about $4,000.

Find the right colours

Colours can help anchor a space and draw in extra light. Before you choose your paint, consider the colour of your floors, countertops, and furniture to determine which colour family will work best for your room

Your chosen colours should also reflect the ambience you want to create. Consider how different colours may impact the mood of your rooms:

Reds – These hues raise a room’s energy and are best suited for accent walls in dining rooms and entryways. You may want to opt for lighter shades to make sure the colour isn’t too intense.

Greens – Ideal for rest and relaxation such as in your bedroom or living room. Choose lighter greens for a soothing ambiance, and darker ones to add gravitas to backdrops with lighter wood flooring.

Blues – Soft and soothing shades of blue are great for bathrooms and bedrooms. Darker blue accents can help visually enlarge a space by making the rest of the room seem brighter.

Yellows – Yellow is daring and versatile and works best when matched with complimentary colours, such as white or blue. If you like brighter colours, go for something a little paler than you think because a whole wall of colour can be more intense than you expect.

Purples – Shades of purple can add sophistication to your office or bedroom. If you like dark purples, paint a shade or two lighter than you think because purples can absorb a lot of light.

Pinks – Often associated with love and kindness, pink is a calming colour that is perfect for nurseries, bedrooms, and even bathrooms. And it’s super trendy right now.

Apply a primer coat before painting. The primer acts as a foundation between your drywall and paint and helps prevent brush and roller marks in your topcoat.
