Early Beginnings
Since December 1, 1945, Preston Hardware has been a proud community-minded business in Ottawa. From hardware to wine-making supplies to elegant bathroom fixtures, Preston Hardware celebrates its 65th anniversary as one of Ottawa’s most successful retailers. Thanks to the loyalty of its customers, Preston Hardware has grown to become Canada’s largest independent hardware store.
When asked how he describes this history, current store co-owner Mario Giannetti pauses and says, “Longevity. It’s a big word. It’s a strong word. Serving clients for six and a half decades, it gives us great pleasure to still be here today and have our offspring slowly take over the business. It’s a big milestone.”
Of course, Preston Hardware didn’t just grow to its current size overnight. For more than 65 years, the family-owned company has gradually expanded, while staying true to its focus on delivering exceptional customer service.
In December 1945, Angelo Locatelli and brother-in-law William Germain officially opened the hardware store doors at 248 Preston Street to serve the local neighbourhood.
“Locatelli returned from the war and there was a piece of land available on Preston Street,” says Giannetti. “After an initial investment for the down payment, he started his hardware store business.”
Initially, Preston Hardware was roughly 800 square feet in size compared to today’s 90,000. “It was big for those days,” says Gianetti, “and we have since expanded but maintain the close-knit feeling with our customers.” The first building only occupying the ground floor with three apartments located on the floor above.
A Dedication to Service and Value Right From the Start
Mario Giannetti started working part-time for Locatelli and Germain when he was 13 years old. Back then, Preston Hardware was a traditional hardware store, specializing mainly in basic tools and supplies.
“They sold hardware, houseware, and paint for families in the area. They also did some door and window repair as well,” he says. “They focused on products that people would use every day.”
According to Giannetti, the two friendly owners worked extremely hard to build their business and provide their customers with exceptional products, value, and service.
“They worked very hard to move the business forward,” he says. “Angelo Locatelli had a vision that he wanted to have a good quality store and good quality products.”
To do this, Locatelli and Germain insisted on having the store clean, tidy and with full shelves to provide the best selection and to provide every customer with respect. They were very friendly people, very pleasant,” says Giannetti. “They would always acknowledge every person who came into the store. They were very nice people to work for.”
In 1957, Preston Hardware underwent its first major expansion, growing to 1,800 square feet and rebranding itself as Ottawa’s first self-serve hardware store. In 1968, Germain sold his share to Harold Locatelli, Angelo’s brother. Angelo and Harold then continued onto successfully manage the store until the early 1970s.
After a long and successful career, it was time Angelo to pass the torch. He turned to Mario Giannetti, who eagerly accepted the opportunity as he knew there was great potential in Preston Hardware.
The second generation of owners, Mario, his brother Sam, and brother-in-law Mario Frangione, were ready to take over.
